A lot of stereotypes are linked to tattoos, and tattooed people. I am not just saying someone having one tattoo and they are automatically pin-pointed out, I am referring to people who are covered in them, or have several. My question(s) are simple...what stereotypes have heard of? What are some stereotypes that you have had about tattooed people. I won't be offended, in fact I like to know what stereotypes and assumptions people make because I use to do that...in fact, at times, I still find myself doing so. It's almost impossible for any human to not judge a person off of looks. I'm just curious to see what people, in my generation, think feel about tattoos...or even piercings. Please comment, and let me know.

My grandma always says, "I don't know how they could cover themselves in such tacky artwork. They will never get a job. They must be losers!" I would love to get one, but mom is reserved about it just because of a future employer and their take on it (yet, she doesn't mind if I get pierced because I can take it off or hide it, which if you play it right you can hide a tattoo too). I usually don't listen to stereotypes, but I mostly heard "loser" "freak" or "rebel rouser" in the past.
ReplyDeleteI personally don't like it...one or two tattoos is fine but I'm not a fan of a person being covered with tattoos. I know some people consider it an art though so I see why they do it.
ReplyDeleteI think a lot of older people consider it "trashy." That's probably mostly because the tattoos that people got when they were younger were just little symbols like a sun or a star. Today tattooing is an art form and it's really incredible the things the artists can do. However, as much as I agree that it's an art form, I think it's a little foolish to get them in constantly visible places like your forearms. That's only because an employer is looking for someone to represent their brand and many customers may buy into those old stereotypes.
ReplyDeleteI personally think that those with tattoos are creative and bold. Simple as that. I would never have it in me to get one (let alone be covered in them since I don't find them appealing/attractive), but I admire those who do because it expresses that they have a personality, no matter what others may consider the personality as. I would never classify anyone as "troubled" etc. or and feel that those who do have nothing better to think about. Stereotypes will unfortunately always be present and it seems like everyone is judged in one way or another so why not get tattoos/piercings if that's what you're into?
ReplyDeleteI really love tattoos and I have one myself- I think the entire experience is gratifying and intimate...especially if what you are getting inked has a profound meaning to you. However, I am aware of the negative stereotypes...some of them so severe that they infringe on employment opportunities. For example, my friend and I applied for the same job once. We were both seniors in high school at the time and had never previously had a job. My tattoo isn't normally visible but she has quite a few and most of them are easily seen. I was hired and she wasn't. This could have been just a fluke but she has had difficulty acquiring a job since then and many of her prospective employers have first and foremost asked her if she would be able to conceal them during her shifts. I find this to be remarkable discrimination- especially if tattoos are artistic and tasteful.
